Obituary for Sylvia Anita Boyd
Sylvia Anita (Henry) Boyd went home to be with the Lord on Mother’s Day, May 12th, 2019. Sylvia was born on March 5, 1924, in Saint Ann’s Bay, Jamaica, W.I. to the late Mr & Mrs Arnold & Adina Henry. She was one of 13 children. Sylvia came to the United States of America in 1945, at the age of 21. She worked as a nanny, then left that position to work at Union Carbide in the housekeeping department.
She married the late John Boyd, Sr. on September 19th 1949 and is survived by their three children. Ronald Boyd (Anselma), Judy Seals (Leroy) and John Boyd Jr., along with seven grand children, Trilintia Boyd, Ronal Boyd, Anita Garris, Stefani Seals, Erika Seals, Anisa Seals and David Boyd and four great grand children, Elijah Reid, Kaiah Boyd, Ajani Boyd and Ariahni Boyd, and two sisters, Valda Brown and Gladys Thompson. She was predeceased by a grand daughter, the late Tressey Smiley.
She retired and then joined her husband in his grocery store business, where she ran the restaurant side. She cooked all kinds of delicious foods, loved by all her customers, and left behind a legacy of amazing dishes. Sylvia loved to cook and bake. Some of her most famous dishes, too many to name, but loved by family and friends, were cod fish cakes and oatmeal raisin cookies. They went very well over the holidays, washed down by her home made rum punch and ginger beer.
She also had a passion for growing garden flowers and house plants, a passion which she passed on to her children and grand children. Sylvia was well loved, and will be deeply missed by her immediate family, as well as by a host of nephews, nieces, friends and her care givers whom she adored very much.
Funeral Services will be held at Guarino Funeral Home, 9222 Flatlands Ave, Brooklyn NY 11236. The wake will be on Monday, 5/20/19 from 4pm-9pm and funeral services will be held on Tuesday, 5/21/19 at 10am, followed by interment at Pine Lawn Cemetery, in Farmingdale, N.Y. A repast will take place afterwards at The Arch Diner, Canarsie, N.Y.
